Amos 5: 21-24

I hate, I despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies. Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and cereal offerings, I will not accept them, and the peace offerings of your fatted beasts, I will not look upon. Take away from me the noise of your harps I will not listen. But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an every-flowing stream.”

I. The Prophet

Amos was a shepherd and a dresser of sycamore.

What was a dresser of sycamore? The sycamore is a type of date palm. A dresser takes the pollen from the male fruit and places it on the female.

II. Message::: Go through the book....

1:3-2... For three transgressions and for four

Speech technique... Attack enemy, then neutral, then friend, then the country itself...

Damascus (Syria) , Tyre (Phoenicians), Edom.. Now related from Esau, Ammonites, Moab, Judah, then the target Israel.

2:6b because they sell the righteous for silver and the needy for a pair of shoes., they that trample the head of the poor into the dust of the earth and turn aside the way of the afflicted; a man and his father go it to the same maiden.. (Yale example... TAMU version, The Corps and the Chicken Ranch.)

2:12 But you made the Nazirites drink wine and commanded the prophets, saying, “You shall not prophesy.”

3: 12. The remnant. As the shepherd rescues from the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of any ear, so shall the people of Israel, who dwell in Samaria be rescued, with the corner of a couch and part of a bed.”

4:1. Hear this word, you cows in Bashan who are in the mountains of Samaria who oppress the poor, who crush the needy who say to their husbands, ‘Bring that we may drink!’ The Lord God has sworn by his holiness that, behold, the days are coming upon you, when they shall take you away with hooks, even the last of you with fishhooks. And you shall go out through the breaches, every one straight before her: and you shall be cast forth into Harmon.

4:6.. I did all of these things and still you did not return. Punishment for teaching.

5:1. The remnant

5:26. Hate evil and love good and establish justice at the gate.

5:21... Greatest passage quoted above.

6: The Woes

Woe to those who are at ease in Zion and to those who feel secure on the mountains of Samaria... Woe to those who lie upon beds of ivory and stretch themselves upon their couches..and drink wine in bowls.

7: 7-9. A plumb line ..Behold I am setting a plum line in the midst of my people Israel; I will never again pass them by, the high places shall be made desolate and the sanctuary\ of Israel shall be made waste, and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.

7:10 Response of Amaziah the priest of Bethel..7:12... O seer go, flee away to the land of Judah and eat bread there and prophesy there; but here never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the kings’s sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom.. Then Amos said I am no prophet, nor a prophet’s son, but I am a herdsman, and a dresser of sycamore trees.

8:9 And on that day says the Lord God, I will make the sun go down at noon, and darken the earth in broad daylight. I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentations; I will bring sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness on every head; I will make it like mourning for an only son, and the end of it like a bitter day.

9: 1b. Not one of them shall flee away, not one of them shall escape.

9:7. Are you not like the Ethiopians to me, O people of Israel.

Hope in the end... In that day I will raise up the booth of David that is fallen and repair its breaches and raise up its ruins and rebuild it as in the days of old.
