Micah

6:8....”He has showed you, O Man what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humble with your God. ( Justice, Kindness, Humility as chief virtues.)

Heart of the Bible” ______________________________________________________________________________

I. The Person

A contemporary of 1st Isaiah. Not as famous as 1st Isaiah

He began to prophesy prior to the fall of the northern kingdom, Israel (Samaria)

Famous for prophesying to the southern Kingdom, Judah during the reign of Hezekiah

Born in Moresheth, a small village in the foothills about 25 miles west of Jerusalem.

Some have exaggerated the contrast with Isaiah a city prophet, but Moresheth was a good size town. Idea..His view was Provencal, Isaiah was centered in Jerusalem.

May have delivered his message in Jerusalem. This is not known.

(Bernade Stade argued that not all of the book was written by Micah.)

II. Third claim to the “Heart of the Old Testament” Previous claim, Hosea’s love doctrine, Amos, Let justice roll down like waters.

6:8....”He has showed you, O Man what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humble with your God. ( Justice, Kindness, Humility as chief virtues.)

A. Greek virtues... Wisdom, Courage, Temperance, Justice.

Judaic-Christian add... Love... (( Mediaeval adds Faith Hope and Charity (Love)

III. Content of Micah

Similar to Amos, but directed more against the priests themselves.

Chap. Transgression of Samaria... destroyed like wax before the fire.. 1:4b

1:8. I will go stripped and naked I will make lamentations.

1:13. Text full of puns

2:1. Famous passage.

Woe to those who devise wickedness and work evil upon their beds! When morning dawns, they perform it, because it is in the power of their hands. They covet field, and seize them and houses and take them away.

(Like 1st Isaiah adding fields to fields... but evil upon their beds and doing it (acting out) is unique.

2: 6. {Meta-preaching} Do not preach - thus they preach- “one should not preach of such things...” Discuss Meta. Preaching. (Ask class for examples... Be tolerant. Those they are intolerant..!

2:11. If a man should go about and utter lies, saying “I will preach to you of wine and strong drink,” he would be preacher for this people” Comment of Roman Catholic doctrine of the parish.

3:1 4

Harshest section

Is it not for you to know justice - (rulers of Israel), you who hate the good and love evil who tare the skin from off my people, and their flesh from off their bones; who eat the flesh of my people and flay their skins from off them, and break their bones in pieces and chop them up like meat in a kettle, like flesh in a caldron.

(MY PROPHETS) WHO CRY PEACE WHEN THEY HAVE SOMETHING TO EAT..” 3:5

Hireling priest.

3:11 Its heads give judgment for a bribe, its priests teach for hire, its prophets devine for money, yet they lean upon the lord and say “Is not the Lord in the midst of us.”.....Jerusalem shall become a heap or ruins, and the mountain of the house as wooded height.”

4:3b They shall beat their swords into ploughshares: and their spear into pruning hooks; nation shall not life up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. {only Micah} but they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree and none shall make them afraid, for the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken” See Isaiah

4:10 “pangs have seized you like a woman in travail? Writhe and groan, O daughter of Zion ....you shall go to Babylon.

5:2. Quotation in Matthew... But you , O Bethlehem Eph’rathah, who are little among the clans on Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose origin is from of old..”

5:5. Remnant

6:6. He has showed you o man what is good...quoted at beginning of lecture.

6:11. Shall I acquit the man with wicked scales... Rick Perry Inspector of weights and measures.. Puritan.. Childhood buying of baloney

7: All lie in weight for blood and each hunts his brother with a net, Their hands are upon what is evil, to do it diligently, the prince and the judge ask for a bribe and the great man utters the evil desires of his soul....put no trust in a neighbor, have no confidence in a friend...a man’s enemies are the men of his own house.”

7:16. Upbeat ending.

Who is a god like thee, pardoning inequity...for the remnant of his inheritance?...He will again have compassion upon us , he will tread our inequity under foot...Thou wilt show faithfulness to Jacob and steadfast love to Abraham as thou hast sworn to our fathers from the days of old.”
